Colon Cancer Nutrition - Client Testimonial

Colon cancer nutrition testimonial from a client of Meredy Birdi, The Cancer Dietitian

Colon Cancer Nutrition - Client Testimonial

I needed some dietary advice following a terminal diagnosis for colon cancer and extreme side effects from chemotherapy Meredy was recommended to me by a friend/colleague. There is a serious lack of advice available on the NHS for this sort of cancer.

I came away with some solid advice and a plan. This was very important to me as I needed some structure and stability in my diet to regain control of my life. I felt reassured and that my concerns were taken seriously with compassion. I didn’t need sympathy, I needed advice, and I got it.

It has been a good news story for me considering how poorly I was when I spoke to Meredy back in Nov and Dec. Things have improved considerably since then with the change of treatment to immunotherapy. My body is tolerating it well, the tumours have shrunk, my health continues to improve, and I’m eating normally and regaining weight. I’m back at yoga and walking at weekends. It is such a relief to be able to plan again and the light at the end of the tunnel is definitely brighter.

Be open and honest about your condition and what you want out of it as Meredy can tailor your requirements to meet your dietary needs. Because she advised simple things that you eat every day, there was no stress in having to buy special food stuffs. That was important to me as was having a written report to refer to. It became my bible. I would recommend to anyone that in your consultation you pay for Meredy to provide the written report. Structured and well written rather than trying to take your own notes.

I still refer to your diet sheets as it acts as a reminder as to what I can eat from everyday things in my fridge and cupboards. Since changing my treatment and taking your advice, I am back to 67kg with a good appetite and not excluding any food groups. There will an abundance of fresh fruit and veg being incorporated into my diet over the summer months.

Everyone’s cancer journey is different but a positive mindset to manage your condition is key to helping you through the difficult times. Having been given a terminal diagnosis for colon cancer after a change of treatment and reviewing my whole lifestyle including dietary support, I have been given back time and health. Meredy helped me with that. Baby steps, small changes, regaining control and building back up to what is my ‘new normal’.
